What does “Wheel of Fortune” make you think of? For me, it’s Grandma McGaughey, who usually had it on during dinner when my sister and I were there to visit. Maybe it’s less about evoking a memory for you, but a shift away from a comfortably predictable presence in your living room, because you still watch it regularly.
Both Sajack and Bob Barker/their shows definitely seem to me like pieces of Gen X childhood, ones that represent a bygone era and will never be replaced. Can I get your thoughts (and an R,S,T,L,N,E)?
Let me hear from you. - Alison
P.S. “The 1977” is a new feature I’m unrolling that will (hopefully) speak directly to those who are at/around my age, but of course open to readers & participants of all ages.
…and it does seem like Ryan S. is one of (if not the only??) current day people who has that affable charm and kind of old-school TV host personality and polish to step in…? Or if there are others out there in the field, I’m not aware of them.
Thanks for reading and responding, Kathy! 😃 Very glad to have your Boomer perspective!
What a fantastic run it had! Nostalgic, simpler times - it survived the changes in our society. Pat Sajack and Vanna White - national icons? Oh heck, let's give it to them. No politics, no scandals, probably too wholesome to make it in this culture, but ... they are still here. Cashing those paychecks, adored by millions, recognizable to the masses, cheered for turning a vowel and delivering a couple of pre-planned jokes about the contestants. They will probably ride off into the sunset with fond memories and joyous hearts. And now it is the national stand-in for famous hosts - Ryan Seacrest. May his journey be just as joyous for all.
Thanks for reading and responding, Ron! (That's lots of Rs.) It really does inspire a bit of awe when you consider the survival through the changes and decades, as you said. Your last sentence - so well said!
Another boomer here. When I think of Wheel of Fortune I think of my parents and grandparents watching it. I also remember a different host, was it Chuck Woolery? I'm not sure. I'm not much of a game show fan but when I was a kid my favorite was Concentration, then Hollywood Squares. I liked Jeopardy too. An even older one I liked was What's My Line, it was fun trying to figure out who the real person was.
Whaaaaaaaaaaat? Just landed in Chicago after a week out of the country and I find out Ryan Seacrest is the new host of Wheel???? Really?
But also… the show reminds me of my dad. He had dementia and died in October 2022 but til the end he watched Wheel faithfully. My last trip home to see him in September, we watched it and he high-fived me for a quick solve.
Def a change! He made me laugh, and hopefully the new person will. I’m ok with it, and a boomer here. I am used to such changes.

Thank you very much.

Yes about Chuck!

Yes, I do believe it’s true! (And P.S., looked like you had an amazing trip!)
That is such a sweet story about your dad. I’m so sorry for your loss, and for such a tough way to see him go. Thanks for sharing that!
