I'm looking for ... a date? (Kind of). Learn more and put in your two cents! Pretty plz.

Hello, readers! This note is going out to subscribers to garner interest in something I’m brewing up. Here’s what I want to know:

Wanna be my ‘date,’ sometimes?

(Not really ha ha. This is NOT a casting call for Love Is Blind, Iowa edition)

I’ve been thinking for several months about hosting/offering some events, preferably in-person, but possibly (also) online, depending on interest (and on where people live). Shoutout to the one subscriber I apparently have in Arkansas!

I’ve got several thoughts swimming around in my mind. Depending on what I hear back from you—and what’s most feasible with my own schedule and (unbelievably glamorous) social life—I’m dreaming up a once, maybe twice-a-month type of gathering where

• we say hi and be social for a bit,

• then dive into a specific topic or “task.” (More on that in a sec.)

So, here are some things I’m wondering, and please note the following:

1. There are 7 questions,

2. Substack limits the number of characters for each answer/option, so before Question 2, I describe a bit about each option above the box.

3. Vote now! You guys get to be the ones helping shape this, so, let me hear from you! (See note about results announcement at end of post).

Question 2: Type/Purpose of Gathering

• BOOK OR MOVIE DISCUSSION(S)- I/we select a specific one, then a date to discuss it, (or maybe even go to one together if it’s showing locally).

• WRITING NIGHT - respond to first-person writing prompts or other brief generative/creative exercises. No workshopping/critiquing (or even sharing!) required, unless people wanted to. (I’d send a separate follow-up poll.)

• CONVERSATION TOPIC(s) of Alison’s choice and/or crowd-sourced when I send out a few questions or suggestions, (on themes likely related to, but not limited to: midwest-ness, midlife, current and/or GenX-nostalgic pop culture), ….anything but politics/current shit-show.

Depending on the level of interest I get and what people vote for, I’ll send out a final survey to hone in / firm with a few more specifics. (But no “circling back”!)
