Alison thank you for your thoughtful questions. I hold Iowa and Cedar Rapids close to my heart! I hope more people find their way to my book, especially readers who haven’t tried a graphic novel before. I’d love to know what you think! 💙❄️

Well, a friend who is a certified death doula who saw my post this morning has already decided she’s hosting a book club event (featuring PV) for March! 😊. Again, thank you, this was an honor!

I love graphic novels, and memoir is my favorite genre! I’m absolutely getting this book ASAP!

This is a fantastic interview! My mom used to buy me Archie comics every Sunday when she went to buy the newspaper 🥰

I grew up with Denise, and remember well (with jealousy) her amazing doodles on the church bulletin while we were taking notes for confirmation! A very talented artist from such a young age, with an amazing Mom! Thanks for a great article.

I can't imagine there being one in MINE, considering that I can only draw stick figures? But I definitely hope Denis will produce another one if she feels compelled with another story to tell.

I was a bit concerned about taking the approach of sharing my own introduction to graphic novels (rather than jump straight to the interview), so, thanks for that feedback!

Thanks for the intro. to graphic novels. This one sounds wonderful, will check it out. Never was much into comic books - but this seems to be several steps up. The story seems memorable and a must read.

Linda, thank YOU for reading and commenting! So glad it piqued your interest.

I never had any interest in comics growing up - -beyond the funnies in the paper, I mean. So I'm with you about not being into comic books - hence my skepticism at first.

Also, I should share that as I was drafting this post, I wavered back and forth about whether to keep, or cut, my intro about my own journey to discovering graphic novels (and finding this book). I wondered if maybe I should just jump straight to the interview. But yours is now the second or third response I've received from people saying they're now curious about graphic memoirs (or this one in particular). So, thanks! :)

Actually, that was part of what drew my interest. I am a voracious reader and did not know what a graphic novel was and saw no reason to check it out. I was pretty much limited to newspaper comics also which have pretty much disappeared with the disappearance of most newspapers. Had you not clarified this for me and likely many others, we likely would have gone longer not knowing and passing up this delightfully talented author and important topic. Thank you!! PS from one who is also a lifelong psychic and medium, ALWAYS TRUST YOUR INTUITION!
