This is great! I've never thought much about this song, but LOVE it!! It's always interesting to get new info/tidbits. I actually put this song on a playlist several months ago because it popped up as a recommendation when I was making an R.E.M and Replacements playlist (after watching The Bear)... hahahaha I ended up with an unrelated chunk in the middle because of the Spotify recommendations - songs that I love and couldn't NOT put on the list... https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2l90tFVuyvZXow1iV1InP8?si=f3914680a1ac4867 Then I added a ton of R.E.M. stuff to the end, in January after reviewing their discography...

Ah, The Bear has such a GREAT use of music, and I wondered if others noticed that it seemed a Gen Xer was surely behind the wheel, because even though the show takes place in modern day, there was some great 90s stuff in there! REM and now I can't remember what else. Pearl Jam? Either way, great show with great music. One of the few out there that I think I'd be happy to take the time to rewatch.

I love knowing I'm not the only one who enjoys learning these tidbits.

And even though I poke a bit of fun at the lyrics/chorus, it really IS a lovely song, isn't it. And now the poigniant (sp!) feel I've always picked up on in the song definitely does seem slightly haunting knowing that it was written as an elegy to Nick Drake.

Yes The Bear had some super awesome and fitting uses of music! I too consider it one that I will watch again! Yes, there was some Pearl Jam in there! Also Wilco and the Replacements (there was a full background conversation on the Replacements season 2 episode 5!)

I looked it up — it’s definitely an elegy to Nick Drake. My history with that song is much different. When it came out, I didn’t think much of it and barely heard it. But they played it on an episode of King of the Hill (when Luann’s boyfriend Buckley died) and it kind of clicked with me.

Thank you for fact-checking for me! ;)

Interesting that you didn't really register the song too much til "King of the Hill." I didn't know it was featured on there, but your mention of it made me think of another great, one-hit-wonder(ish?) track from somewhere around the same period, (I need to Google this!), by The Church, being used at the end of "Napoleon Dynamite." Great song and great movie!

WRONG! Not "The Church." How about When in Rome. "The Promise." Oops.

Yup another rabbit hole for you! Nick Drake did some brilliant, understated orchestral music...a troubled soul who sadly took his life. You'll like his music.

I’ve always heard so much about him but never really checked him out. I think there might be a song by him on the “Garden State” soundtrack that I really liked but that’s as far as I’ve ever “explored.” Sounds like he was another case of a tragic talent.

I might have known Gilmour was involved with that a LONG time ago, but had forgotten it. I had no idea it was about Nick Drake!

Thank you for reading! I didn’t do much source checking on that (about Drake) but I’m going with that random rock-history Fb post! 😁

Unless you define eras with Treasury Secretaries, it should be Reagan era.
